100 Blessed Sleeping Tigers (躺平福虎)

Before CNY last year, our studio artist completed writing a piece of Chinese calligraphy art with 100 different interpretations of the character 福 (blessing) in seal script (百福圖). This year, instead of writing out the hundred letters again, he designed and drew 100 Blessed Sleeping Tigers (躺平福虎)!

For this mini art project, we collaborated with the local paper workshop Lomfafair again to help us craft the beautifully recycled handmade paper. The drawing of the Blessed Sleeping Tiger was obviously inspired by a Pokemon character and not so obviously resemble the character 福 in seal script. Prior to drawing on the postcard-sized paper, we laser-cut a specially designed cut line so that the postcard can easily be teared into 2 mini fai-chuns. 4-letter fai-chun greetings were handwritten on the postcards before they were numbered and sealed by the artist’s chop. At the end, most of the mini postcard fai-chuns were mailed out to friends in HK, Canada, and US before the start of CNY.

Many friends who had received our Blessed Sleeping Tiger happily shared a photo of the art. We were very happy to see that our little piece of functional (postcard), sustainable (recycled paper), and delightful (who doesn’t like Snorlax?!) art was lovingly cherished. We hope that this mini art project can bring forth a little joy as the city braces for a severe pandemic wave.
